o univerzitě
Čím byla tvá univerzita výjimečná? Jak vypadaly prostory ve kterých jsi studoval(a) a univerzitní vybavení?
Faculty of Chemistry (Complutense University of Madrid) is situated in one place with others faculties (faculty of physics, biology, mathematics, informatics). There is a park in front of the faculty, where there are always a plenty of students, who are talking, having their lunch, even dancing… Atmosphere is great!
It is four-flour building. There are several elevators for those who do not like to go by stairs. The rooms are provided with all necessary for studying. Regarding to the performance of the experimental work, there are all needed equipment (pH-meters, different shakers, thermoincubators, centrifuges, ultrasound baths, potentiostats, spectrophotometer for ELISA plate, etc.).
Faculty of Chemistry (Complutense University of Madrid) is located close to the city center. It is easy to get to the faculty by subway (station “Cuidad Universitaria”).
Co tě první napadne, když pomyslíš na svou "adoptivní" univerzitu. Čím byla výjimečná? Jak vypadaly prostory ve kterých jsi studoval(a) a univerzitní vybavení?
I highly recommend Faculty of Chemistry (Department of Analytical Chemistry) to others PhD students for traineeship. The employers of Erasmus office helped with all paperwork. My supervisor and post-doc students consulted me with my experiments. We always discussed the obtained results, and I boldly suggested some solutions or asked about everything if I did not know or understand something. Additionally, they helped me with some organization moments, for example to buy transport ticket or to print/scan some documents… I have never felt myself inconvenient or alone in the lab. The atmosphere in the laboratory with other graduate students was really friendly, because we always drank coffee in the morning and had lunch together.
Jak vypadá studentský život na univerzitě?
Studoval(a) jsi v angličtině, nebo v jazyce hostitelské země? Jaké požadavky jsou v oblasti jazyka kladeny univerzitou?
I spoke English (B2). There were no language problems, because everyone at the university knows English.
o městě
Jak na tebe město působilo? Jak byste jej charakterizoval/a? Co je zde zajímavého k vidění?
Madrid is an amazing city. There are many places to go (for example, city center to enjoy the architecture; parks to take a boat ride and see a lot of green parrots, peacocks, seagulls; restaurants to try octopus). Additionally, there are the whole Latin district, where you can discover and learn a new culture. If you are a big fan of football, it is definitely your city.
There are twelve metro lines in Madrid. But don't worry, just watch the arrows.
o financích
Jak lze podle Tvojí zkušenosti vyjít se stipendiem? Kolik procent výdajů Vám pokrylo? Jaký je Váš názor na ceny v zemi obecně?
The scholarship (750 euros per month) is enough with a condition that you rent a room in the flat (you will not be able to rent the whole apartment). Unfortunately, I cannot say anything about price/conditions to stay at the students’ accommodation, as I rent a room at three-room apartment. In my case three-month scholarship covered all my expanses, except the flight tickets.
The approximate prices in Madrid (February-April 2022):
- rent a room at the apartment – min. 300 euros + utilities (one month);
- transport – 12.25 euros for 10-trip-ticket or personal transport ticket for one month – 55 euros (above 26 years)/26 euros (below 26 years);
- taxi from airport – min. 30 euros;
- food – prices are little bit higher than in Prague;
- average bill at the restaurant – 15-20 euros;
- clothes – prices are the same as in Prague (there is a huge five-flour Primark);
- there are a lot of museums… with free entrance.
Poraď prosím spolužákům, jak ušetřit - Kde nakupovat? Jaké služby lze v rámci úspory financí využívat?
I recommend buying a monthly transport ticket, valid for all buses and subways and not limited by number of trips (it is much cheaper than buying a ticket for 10 trips for 12.25 euros or 1 trip for 1.5 euros). But you can buy this monthly ticket only with a personal transport card with a photo (like "litačka" in Prague). To obtain this personal transport card, you need to register online at the Madrid Public Transport Office and select a meeting date (you will be photographed). I highly recommend doing this before your arrival, because I had to wait 2 weeks for the day of the meeting. Madrid is also divided into several transport zones. Complutense University, like most of the city, belongs to the A1 zone. When looking for housing, be sure to check that it is in the A1 transport area. Otherwise, you will have to buy a transport ticket, which covers the area of A1 and, for example, B1 or even B2, which is much more expensive.
In my opinion, the best place for quality and price to buy food and other products is the supermarket "Mercadona". In addition, there are many small Chinese stores where you can buy a lot of small goods at a good price (for example, I bought a lunch box, scissors, headphones there).
o ubytování
Jaké ubytování sis zvolil(a)? Doporučil(a) bys jej ostatním? A pokud ne, jaká varianta ubytování je podle Tvých zkušeností nejlepší (kolej, ubytování v soukromém bytě, soukromá kolej, sdílený pokoj a podobně...)?
I cannot say anything about price/conditions to stay at the students’ accommodation, as I rent a room with the own bathroomn at three-room apartment for 300 euros without utilities (+ min. 50 euros). I was satisfied with my accommodation, because the people I shared an apartment with were very nice.
o zážitcích
Využil(a) jsi Erasmu k cestování po tvé zemi/Evropě? Jaké jsou tvoje nejlepší cestovatelské zážitky? Co naopak nedoporučuješ?
I only explored Madrid. I worked in the laboratory from Monday to Friday and took part in protests against the Russian invasion of Ukraine every weekend.
But others students visited Barcelona or even some cities in France.
Jazyk a kultura: jakých kulturních odlišností jste si všiml/a? Jak jste se vypořádával/a s národním jazykem? Byl to i jazyk vašeho studia? Máte pocit, že jste se v jazyce díky pobytu posunul/a?
I spoke English (B2). There were no language problems, because everyone at the university knows English.
závěrečné hodnocení
Proč právě sem? V čem je lokalita výjimečná? Proč bys své kamarády do své země/ města poslal/a ty?
If your goal is to deepen your knowledge / improve your skills in analytical chemistry, and if you want to be part of a friendly group, the Department of Analytical Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid is definitely the right place.
live-saving tips
Kdybych jel(a) znovu, určitě bych si nezapomněl(a) zabalit..
... some traditional Czech products.
I took Becherovka, Olomoucké Tvarůřky and some Ukrainian sweets to Madrid (since I was born and raised in Ukraine). It was a really great idea, because we organized a party where we tasted typical Czech, Ukrainian and Spanish food. I highly recommend doing the same.
Před odjezdem bych býval(a) rád(a) věděl(a), že...
the whole university is closed for the Easter holidays (this year it was closed from 8th – 18th of April).
Nejvíc mě překvapilo, že...
Everything was great.
Nejtěžší pro mě bylo....
Everything was perfect. It was one of my best choices - to go to Madrid for an internship. I regret why I didn't go there for longer (three months flew by very quickly).
